Family of 15-year-old boy left without answers as inquest rules accidental drowning
George Cuckoo drowned in a lake near Swanscombe during the May heatwave
An inquest has recorded a verdict of accidental death after a 15-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a lake within a disused quarry.
It was on May 27th 2026 that 15-year-old George Cuckoo went swimming with two friends in what's known locally as 'Blue Lake' and 'The Dipping Lake.'
Assistant Coroner Mrs Venessa Holt told the court that George was a capable but not a strong swimmer.
She added that his friends had tried to help him after he got into trouble near the middle of the lake, but were unable to do so, so they swam back to the bank and called the emergency services.
Exactly how George ended up in the middle of the the lake, which police estimated to be between 60 and 65 meters in diameter, and over 5 meters deep in places, remains unclear.
A statement from Kent Police said that the boys had only been at the lake for around 5 minutes, before all three entered the water.
However, South East Coast Ambulance service stated that the boys had been in the area for some time prior to the incident, and that George had been the only one of the trio in the water at the time, with the others swimming out after hearing him call for help.
George's father Simon Cuckoo and his sister Chloe, who were both at the hearing said that they wanted more information the event unfolded, and what would be done to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.
Speaking to the Coroner, Simon Cuckoo said:
"I’ve got friends in Swanscombe.... their sons and their friends are still going in the lakes, and even though they know what’s gone on, they’re still going over there”.
A full report on the safety measures currently in place, and recommendations for how to make the area safer, is expected at a later date.
