Club Chemistry re-opening tonight in Canterbury after Meningitis
The club shut after the meningitis outbreak killed two people, but say now is safe to reopen doors.
The club at the heart of Kent's deadly meningitis outbreak plan to reopen their doors tonight, after closing on March 15th.
Club Chemistry say they decided to close out of consideration for the wellbeing of staff, guests and the wider community. In an online statement owner Louise Jones-Roberts said:
"When the consideration is between business and people's well-being, it isn't even a decision.
"What was hard - what I could not have prepared for - was waking up eveyr morning to know that two young people had died, that two of my own staff were in hospital and that people I care about were frightened. My team are extraordinary human beings. They showed up for this community in a way I will never forget. "
Jones-Roberts went on to add that as the UKHSA had downgraded the outbreak risk level, and there had no new cases, the club planned to reopen. Further continuing:
"We have been closed for two weeks. We have not reopen a day before we should have.
"Club Chemistry is coming back. And we are bringing something with us.
"We have partnered permanently with Meningitis Now, a charity that supports those living with of bereaved with Meningitis and will be donating all the door money from Friday 3 April 2026 to help them continue their much needed work."
The club also plan to implement a Track and Trace system for guests, provide regular sanitisers throughout the building and will ask any guests vaping or smoking inside to leave immediately.
