Public Spaces Protection Order aims to curb anti-social behaviour

Ashford Borough Council has renewed its Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for Ashford Urban, extending coverage to areas around Ashford Town Centre and South Ashford.

The revised PSPO aims to continue addressing anti-social behaviour issues in specific geographical areas, distinct from orders targeted at individuals. Anyone violating these activities within an area under the order could face prosecution or a £100 fixed penalty notice.

Originally introduced in December 2023, the order has been renewed and amended following a public consultation in November. Changes to the PSPO prohibit possessing devices like catapults, slingshots, or similar that can discharge projectiles. Additionally, riding or operating e-scooters, e-bikes, or any electrically powered personal transport device is restricted, with an exception for mobility scooters used by individuals with disabilities or limited mobility, and electrified pedal cycles.

The PSPO addresses behaviours such as street drinking and anti-social vehicle use, which negatively impact public safety and wellbeing. These amendments reflect current trends observed by enforcement agencies and have been crafted in collaboration with Kent Police.

Cllr Katrina Giles, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Health at Ashford Borough Council, said: “I’m pleased that we actively continue to tackle the issues outlined in the PSPO that are affecting residents and visitors in the area.

“The amendments are in line with current trends, data and patterns that our Enforcement and Community Safety teams along with Kent Police are facing and this order sends out a clear message that certain behaviours will not be tolerated.”
