Motorbike owners in Worcestershire are being encouraged to volunteer with Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (GDBA) to help train guide dog puppies for their future roles.

The GDBA has highlighted the importance of socialisation for guide dog puppies and hopes to integrate motorbike noise into their training to reduce the chance of startling young dogs.

Kian, a 10-week-old golden retriever, recently met riders from the Harley Owners Group in Kidderminster. The initiative aims to help puppies grow more comfortable around motorbikes, reducing potential fears that could pose safety risks for their future owners.

Haley Andrews, the head of puppy raising for the charity, emphasised the significance of socialisation, saying motorbikes can be "unsettling" for dogs. Andrews added: "For a guide dog, that fear isn’t just a nuisance – it can be a genuine safety risk for the person relying on them."

The charity is currently seeking about 100 puppy raisers monthly to meet demand and continue supporting the World of real-world training needs.

Kevin Taplin from the Harley Owners Group, Wolfruna Chapter, expressed enthusiasm, saying: "It was great to see Kian’s response to our Harley-Davidson bikes. We hope early exposure to motorbikes and all their gear helps pups like him in their training."

Passionate motorbike riders, enthusiasts, and potential volunteers are encouraged to get involved with Guide Dogs to support the essential training and socialisation of future guide dogs.
