West Mercia Police is sending a clear message to motorists to not drink and drive over this festive period.

Last December the force arrested 186 people across the three counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire for being over the limit while behind the wheel.

It's warning drivers about the consequences driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can lead to which could end up being fatal.

"It simply is not worth taking the risk," said Darren Godsall, a roads policing and operational policing unit (OPU) inspector for West Mercia Police.

"With alcohol, there is no way to determine you will be okay, that's because it varies from person to person depending on your weight, your age, your gender, your metabolism, the type and the amount of alcohol you've had, what you've eaten, your stress levels.

"(If going out) either have a nominated driver or simply just don't have alcoholic drinks or take drugs during this period because of the devastating impact it has on families, not just yourselves, but other people."

Over the past three years across the three counties there's been 13 fatalities and 132 serious injuries on the roads where alcohol has been a contributory factor.

An additional 24 fatalities and 100 serious injuries occurred involving drugs.
