Second graduation ceremony in Herefordshire university's history is 'exciting', says chief executive
The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) second graduation ceremony is being held at Hereford Cathedral this afternoon (9 May)
20 students are to graduate from Herefordshire's engineering university today (9 May) and become only the second cohort in its history to do so.
The group will follow in the footsteps of last year's first graduating class out of Hereford-based The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE).
25 people who joined the university when it first opened in 2021 were celebrated at last year's graduation ceremony at Hereford Cathedral, which is also where this year's one is taking place this afternoon.
Chief executive and president James Newby said it is fantastic to see more now picking up their degrees.
"It feels as though it's been a very quick year since our first graduation," he said.
"What's most important is that this is now part of the annual calendar of achievement and aspiration in the county of Herefordshire.
"We're hugely excited by it, we're also excited that we're able to talk about each of our graduates at the ceremony themselves, that's important to us because we're a small institution and the fact that we know our students individually matters a great deal to us."
From this September, NMITE will also welcome people onto its new autonomous robotics degree.
The degree has been set-up following an agreement being reached last December between the university and the UK Armed Forces to develop the course which will train 15 civilian students and up to five soldiers a year as drone technology specialists.
"In pretty short order, we've gone from being a single programme institution to being a multi-programme institution," Mr Newby said.
"It means there are many more choices and pathways for students to take and that's just hugely important as it just widens access and opportunity even further."
This year's graduation ceremony is scheduled to get underway at 2pm.
