Councillors in the Wyre Forest have voted in favour of plans to create a single unitary authority for Worcestershire.

At a Council meeting on 12th November, Wyre Forest District councillors considered two proposals to restructure local governance in Worcestershire – a single unitary authority covering the entire county or two separate councils divided between the North and South.

Following the vote, councillors overwhelmingly supported the One Worcestershire proposal, considering it more cost-effective and less disruptive.

The approach avoids the complexities associated with dividing key services such as children’s services and adult social care.

Under Government plans, Wyre Forest District Council, together with Worcestershire County Council and the five other district, borough, and city councils , will be abolished on 1st April 2028.

Both cases are expected to be submitted to the Government by 28th November 2025.

Marcus Hart, Leader of Wyre Forest District Council, said:

“We didn’t ask for Local Government reorganisation, and we don’t want it. It is being imposed on us by the Government.

“If it is going ahead, we want the best deal for Wyre Forest residents.

"By supporting the One Worcestershire proposal, we are prioritising stronger accountability, better financial sustainability and less disruption for our residents.

"This decision by the council reflects our commitment to shaping a future that works for everyone across the county.”

The government and Parliament will make the final decision on which option is implemented after consultation early next year.
