Permission given for University of Worcester's 250-home project to progress
The plans to build them on the edge of the city have been approved but will need to get further approval on the finer details of them before construction can take place
Plans put forward by the University of Worcester to build 250 homes on the edge of the city have been approved.
Outline permission has been granted for the scheme that'll see Ambrose Farm in Oldbury Road demolished to make way for the new builds.
The university states in the approved plans that public open space, play areas and new pedestrian routes will form part of the development, with it now needing to get approval on a further application setting out the finer details of the proposal before construction work can go ahead.
In a planning statement, the university said the the 11.62-hectare site is an “entirely appropriate and sustainable location for housing development”, adding, "“it is located adjacent to the main urban area of Worcester and is surrounded by existing and consented residential development”.
Residents have raised concerns the development will put more pressure on existing services such as GP surgeries and the hospital, along with worries about the impact it will have on the nearby Laugherne Brook Nature Reserve.
Malvern Hills District Council said the scheme, which falls just outside the city boundary, “would provide short term construction employment but long term future residents would have the opportunity of supporting local services and facilities in an otherwise sustainable location”.
“In environmental terms a policy compliant scheme is considered capable of being brought forward,” the council said, adding that the benefits outweigh any “adverse impacts”.
