Organisers 'excited' for return of annual event dedicated to historical Worcestershire figure
The Elgar Festival, which celebrates the life and work of Sir Edward Elgar who is from the county, gets underway today (23 May)
An event set-up to honour and keep the work of a renowned English composer from Worcestershire on display is to get underway for another year.
Starting in 2018, the Elgar Festival is dedicated to Sir Edward Elgar who was born in the county back in the 19th century.
It originally began as a weekend of activities, but has since progressed, with this year's one spanning over nine days.
The programme is centred around the music created by Elgar himself, with three pre-festival events already taking place, with another 27 planned across 15 different venues as the festival officially starts today (23 May).
Artistic director of the Elgar Festival, Kenneth Woods, said: "This is an incredibly exciting time of year, it does come up on us very fast and seemingly faster every year.
"As the festival gets more adventurous and more ambitious and busier, the scramble in the spring is always greater.
"When we finally sort of open the doors and hit the switch for all those sounds and lights to come on, it's almost a relief, then the festival is over in the blink of an eye."
This year's festival comes to a close on the 31 May.
