Herefordshire Council have announced Former Leader of Herefordshire Council, Councillor Tony Johnson, passed away on 2nd May 2026 at the age of 89.

Johnson served as Leader from May 2013 until 2018 and remained a councillor for Hope End ward until 2023.

His leadership was marked by substantial regeneration projects, including the opening of the Old Market retail and leisure development in Hereford in 2014.

This project transformed a longstanding brownfield site into a thriving hub for shopping, leisure, and employment opportunities, which boosted Hereford city center's appeal and investment prospects.

Economic development was also a focus during Johnson's leadership. He was instrumental in early delivery phases of the Hereford (Rotherwas) Enterprise Zone, designed to attract new businesses and manufacturing jobs to the area. Through new planning strategies initiated in 2013, the zone became a key component of Herefordshire's economic strategy.

Throughout his leadership, Johnson navigated periods of significant financial strain for local government, managing the council's budgets whilst prioritising infrastructure investment, economic growth, and essential services.

Current Herefordshire Council Leader Jonathan Lester paid tribute to Johnson, describing him as "a kind and generous man" and commending his dedication and calm leadership during challenging times for the county.

Lester also highlighted Johnson's continued involvement following his tenure as Leader and his lifelong commitment as a public servant.

Before entering politics, Johnson had an extensive career in banking, contributing to the transformation of TSB from a state-run entity to a commercial business before retiring in 2001.

In respect and honour of his contributions, the Herefordshire Council County Flag will be flown at half-mast on the day of his funeral. The council expressed condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
