Steam locomotives enhance heritage rail experience

The Bewdley Express commuter rail trial, which commenced on Tuesday 1st September, continues to innovate by introducing steam-hauled services.
Yesterday, the trial saw its first steam locomotive journeys as two services departed from Kidderminster Town station at 17:45 and 18:50, reaching Bewdley in just 12 minutes.
The introduction of steam services marks a significant shift following a month of diesel-only operations at Severn Valley Railway (SVR), primarily due to the heightened risk of lineside fires caused by hot, dry weather.
The timing coincides well with the Bewdley Express arrangements, allowing for a seamless start to steam-powered services.
Steam locomotives will feature in the evening services on Wednesdays and Thursdays, while the morning trips will be operated by Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs), with Tuesday evenings also utilising DMUs.
Volunteer photographers were on hand to capture this historic moment, with photographs showcasing the majesty of steam set against the picturesque backdrop of the heritage railway line.
The Bewdley Express trial, led by West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE) and SVR, seeks to evaluate demand for heritage commuter services connecting Bewdley to the wider West Midlands rail network.
