Gloucestershire Libraries launch Memory Sparks Bags for dementia support
Free resources offer reminiscence activities for families and carers
Gloucestershire Libraries have introduced Memory Sparks Bags to aid people living with dementia and memory loss, providing a free resource for sharing memories and starting conversations with family, friends, and carers.
These bags can be borrowed like library books using a Gloucestershire Libraries card and reserved for collection at any library in the county.
Each Memory Sparks Bag contains books, photographs, sensory objects, activities, and conversation prompts designed to inspire storytelling and reminiscence.
Developed with dementia specialists and community groups, the bags aim to be inclusive and accessible, supporting both individuals with dementia and those caring for them.
The initiative is backed by NHS One Gloucestershire funding and is part of the library's Ageing with Creativity programme, which encourages wellbeing and social connections among older adults.
Positive feedback has highlighted the bags' effectiveness in sparking conversations and strengthening relationships.
Councillor Lisa Spivey, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, praised the initiative for its role in supporting community wellbeing.
"Libraries play an important role in supporting the wellbeing of our communities," she said.
The project offers an enjoyable way for individuals to connect through shared experiences, and those interested in borrowing a bag can find further information on Gloucestershire Libraries' website.
