Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in his 70s after a serious assault in Cheltenham.

The victim died after an incident on Wednesday night (8 April), leading to the teens initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm being rearrested for murder.

A 17-year-old was apprehended on Thursday night, while a 16-year-old was taken into custody in the early hours of Friday. Both arrests occurred in Cheltenham, and the suspects remain in police custody.

Police were alerted to an incident around 7.30pm on Wednesday (8 April) involving three males.

Reports show that two individuals threw a large branch from Millennium Bridge at a cyclist passing below, though the cyclist did not sustain injuries.

The males then moved from the bridge to Honeybourne Way, where they encountered the elderly victim.

An exchange ensued between them before one of the youths punched the man in the face, causing him to fall.

The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.

Emergency services responded, and the victim was transported to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where he sadly died.

Following reviews of CCTV footage and evidence gathered at the scene, police released images to enlist public assistance in identifying the suspects.
