Queen's Park Glasshouse in Glasgow 'saved'
Glasgow City Council has announced that the Queen’s Park Glasshouse will remain open for the 'foreseeable future.'
The B-listed structure had been set to permanently close in August, owning to what the council described as 'unsustainable costs'.
Residents in the Southside had been campaigning to stop the closure taking place. A demonstration outside the Glasshouse was staged on Sunday (June 21st), with another planned for today (June 25th) outside the City Chambers.
Now, the local authority has confirmed they'll engage with stakeholders through the People Make Glasgow Communities programme to develop a sustainable long-term future for the building.
However, the council says that 'significant capital investment will be required in the longer term, securing continued operation.'
Responding to the news, Southside Central SNP Councillor Mhairi Hunter said: “The Glasshouse is a much-loved and historic part of our city’s heritage, and I know how strongly local people feel about preserving it: the engagement and passion shown by campaigners, including at the public meetings I attended, has played a vital role in getting us to this point, and I thank campaigners for all their hard work - I know we are all looking forward to seeing what the future brings for the Glasshouse.”
Her ward colleague Cllr Alexander Belic added: “We know that the future of the Glasshouse depends on finding the investment for the renovation of the Victorian structure, so finding a sustainable future use for the site that continues to allow for public access to this jewel of Glasgow’s heritage is vital: but I know there is a shared appetite to make this happen and I’ll be doing what I can as part of that.”
