A serving Maldon Town councillor is among two additional men who've been charged as part of an extensive investigation into human trafficking for sexual exploitation, rape, and other sexual offences.
Richard Howard-Smith, 35, and Eldred Reames, 24, both residents of Southwood Chase, Danbury, have been remanded into custody following their arrest on Thursday, 21st May.
Cllr Richard Howard-Smith voluntarily stepped aside from his official duties at the outset of this investigation, according to Maldon Town Council.
The authority added, 'moving forward, his position will remain under continuous review, strictly guided by relevant legislation and advice from the appropriate authorities.'
Cllr John Driver, Town Mayor said "The allegations reported are deeply disturbing, and our thoughts are first and foremost with the victims. As a Council, our primary concern is the safety and wellbeing of our residents. We have full confidence in the police to conduct a thorough investigation, and we urge the public to allow the investigation to take its course."
This case has already seen two other men charged: Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, and Scott Drewitt-Barlow, 32, also of Southwood Chase, Danbury.
Both men are due at Chelmsford Crown Court on 5th June and will remain in custody until then.
The investigation, led by Detective Inspector Lydia George of Essex Police's Serious Crime Directorate, has involved searches of premises in Danbury, Maldon, and Braintree.
DI George said: "I would again appeal to anyone reading or hearing this who has information they feel ready to share with us to please come forward and contact us through the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP)," she said.
