Council staff have been drafted in to clear six tonnes of rubbish dumped on the side of the A12.

Tyres, rubbish and even an old gate were dumped beside the busy road.

Images shared by Chelmsford City Council show vans filled with bags of rubbish as well as pieces of wood and metal in efforts to clear the mess.

The council said the images were just a small glimpse of the work its staff had to do every day to keep the city clean.

A council spokesman said: “Our teams can’t do everything everywhere all at once, so we need help from everyone to not drop litter — including not hopping it out of the window on major A roads. We know that a lot of this rubbish will be from people passing through Chelmsford.

“But every piece of rubbish taken home helps our teams, helps the environment, and helps other road users. And of course, we must acknowledge the brilliant work of Chelmsford Litter Wombles in keeping Chelmsford tidy. So please do your bit. Big thanks if you already do, or resolve to do so in future.”

It comes after a rise in flytipping across the city of Essex. In 2024, figures showed that the city council had recorded almost 1,000 incidents of fly-tipping since the start of 2023/24.
