A man has appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash in Purleigh.

Police said 23-year-old Henry Barnes, of Brentwood, has also been charged with drink driving.

He appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court on Friday 30th October.

He is next due to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday 27th November.

The charges follow an investigation by police into a single-vehicle crash on Hackmans Lane at around 2am on Monday 6th January.

Emergency services attended, and 21-year-old Thomas Chapman, from Brentwood, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said members of his family attended court for Friday's hearing.

In a tribute to Thomas, known as Tom, earlier this year, his family said: "Tom was a good and kind man who loved and protected the people in his life. He will be missed beyond measure but forever remembered. The family request privacy at this difficult time."
