Plans have been unveiled for 150 new homes on farmland in a north Essex village.

Mersea Homes is proposing the development off Earls Colne Road, Great Tey, which also includes public open space and new small junction. The village is about 10 miles west of Colchester City Centre.

The site is near Great Tey Church of England Primary School and the historic Tey Barn, which dates back to the 15th-century.

The plans state the development will deliver affordable housing “to meet housing needs” and also “ensure the long-term vitality of the village through sustainable growth.”

The plans include 30 per cent affordable, alongside “significant” areas of public open space.

It comes as Colchester City Council is planning more than 20,000 new homes from 2025 to 2041. The local plan, also includes land for businesses, and other facilities such as schools and healthcare centres.

The new plans, for the new homes in Great Tey, also state: “The proposed development would represent sustainable development that will deliver significant benefits and can successfully integrate into the existing Great Tey settlement.”

If agreed the development would see a main access for vehicles in Earls Colne Road.

145 proposed dwellings will take access from Earls Colne Road, with the remaining five dwellings taking access via a private drive access on Chappel Road, according to the plans.
