More than a tonne of litter and waste has been removed from roadsides, verges and public spaces across Colchester during a series of clean-up operations in October.

Carried out by Colchester City Council's Street Care and Safety team, more than 1,100kg was collected.

The team worked across several locations, including stretches of the A12 and Weir Lane.

On the A12 on Friday 23rd October, crews removed 710kg of waste. The team took advantage of the A12 closure for essential maintenance to clear a four kilometre stretch. Waste collected included litter, tyres, abandoned roadwork signs and two separate incidents of fly-tipping.

On 6th October, crews cleared litter from the Langham Junction area, Park Lane southbound to Birchwood Road Bridge and the Junction 28 slip road. Roughly 185kg of litter was collected, including a discarded roof rack.

A further 100kg of litter was also collected on 14th October on the A12 northbound near Domsey Chase. Waste included HGV debris, a large mudguard, a metal car bumper and a road cone.

During a litter pick on Weir Lane the council joined forces with Colchester MOD. In just 25 minutes they collected 14 black bags of litter, weighing around 138kg.

Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: "Our Street Care and Safety teams work hard throughout the year to keep Colchester clean, safe and welcoming, often carrying out this work in challenging conditions and alongside busy roads.

"The fact that more than a tonne of litter and waste was removed during October alone shows the impact that careless littering continues to have on our environment.

"Every piece of rubbish that is dropped or dumped illegally affects our communities, spoils local areas and takes valuable resources to clear up. I'd like to thank our teams and our partners at Colchester MOD for their efforts and encourage everyone to play their part in keeping Colchester clean by disposing of waste responsibly."
