A man has been sentenced to eleven years in prison for rape following an investigation by Thames Valley Police.
Neil Trevor Smith, 43, from The Croft, Loughton, Essex, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court on Friday, 23rd October, for his crimes committed in Maidenhead.
Smith was unanimously found guilty by a jury of two counts of rape after an eight-day trial.
The incident took place on 9th September 2023, when Smith and the victim, a woman in her twenties, were staying at the Travelodge Hotel.
During their stay, Smith raped the victim over a two-hour period, taking her phone and making threats of violence when she attempted to leave.
The victim managed to escape and sought help from a Travelodge staff member, who called the police and stayed with her until officers arrived.
Hotel staff and a guest attempted to prevent Smith from escaping.
Smith was arrested by officers three days later on 12th September 2023.
Investigator Collete Gray praised the victim's bravery, stating, “I would like to commend the victim for the remarkable bravery she showed in coming forward to report this offence and for the courage and resilience she demonstrated throughout the court process."
Gray added, "Despite an earlier trial being adjourned due to the defendant's non-appearance, the victim remained committed to supporting our investigation."
Thames Valley Police expressed relief that the court recognised the danger Smith poses, particularly to vulnerable women, and hopes this sentence provides the victim with justice and reassurance.
