Firefighters in Harwich have successfully contained a significant warehouse fire on Stour Road, with the site now under control and road access restored.

At 1.50pm, Station Manager Jason Gould confirmed the road has re-opened, as crews cool hotspots before handing the site back to its owners. Gould expressed gratitude for public patience, stating, "Residents will see some smoke but this is not traveling in the direction of their properties. There is also no risk of asbestos in the smoke."

Earlier updates

Throughout today, firefighting efforts have progressed steadily, beginning at 7.20am with around 35 firefighters working in sectors to manage the blaze. A water bowser was utilized to shuttle water to the scene, as emergency services addressed the large plume of smoke generated by the fire.

By 10.30am, Group Manager Howard Midwood reported the fire was under control, and resource allocation has since been scaled down. Despite the complete collapse of the building's main structure, Midwood reassured there was no immediate fire safety risk to nearby residents and thanked them for their understanding during the incident.

Investigation planned

As efforts to stabilise the site continue, authorities are preparing to conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire once conditions allow.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and keep windows and doors shut if smoke persists in the vicinity.

As crews complete their vital tasks, the cooperation and understanding of the community have played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of emergency response measures in Harwich.
