Essex County Council announces legal challenge to proposed local government reorganisation
Councillor Peter Harris objects to government plans for Greater Essex
Essex County Council has signalled its intention to legally challenge the government's plans for Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Greater Essex.
Councillor Peter Harris, leader of Essex County Council's Reform Group, addressed a letter to Steve Reed MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government on 13th May, articulating strong opposition to the proposed plans.
In his communication, Councillor Harris conveyed a firm stance against the government's principle for restructuring local governance in Essex.
“We will utilise all resources at our disposal to challenge and resist LGR,” Harris stated.
As a decisive first action in his role as group leader, Harris has instructed legal advisors to draft a pre-action protocol letter aimed at formalising the council's objections.
The letter is poised for dispatch, contingent upon the approval of the Reform UK group.
The council's move reflects significant concerns regarding the implications of governmental reforms on local administration and governance.
