Colchester welcomes 39 Chilean flamingos in bid to boost breeding
New arrivals bring vibrant flair to the flamingo flock
Colchester Zoological Society has welcomed an exciting addition of 39 Chilean flamingos from Auchingarrich Wildlife Park.
These new arrivals underwent a period in quarantine before joining the existing flock of 25 flamingos at the zoo's lake.
The quarantine measures allowed zoo staff to conduct health checks ensuring seamless integration with the resident birds.
The total flamingo population at the zoo now stands at 64, prompting the Estates and Maintenance Team to expand the habitat significantly.
With improved fencing, a revamped indoor house, and new gates in place, the flamingos have more space to thrive.
Zoo visitors will benefit from enhanced viewing access along Scoop and Go and Wrap and Roll, offering a closer look at the vibrant flock.
On 3rd August 2026, the two separate flocks joined together to form a ‘flamboyance’.
The zoo hopes these new arrivals will stimulate breeding, supported by the Animal Care Team who will be listening for the signs of webbed feet.
Chilean flamingos are classified as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with a wild population estimated at about 200,000.
Chilean flamingos have bristle-like tongues that help filter water and food, while their iconic pink hue comes from the shrimps they consume.
Visitors can support the Chilean flamingos through adoptions, donations, or by simply visiting the zoo, helping both wildlife and wild places.
