A specialist police dog played a key role in the recovery of drugs worth an estimated £364,000 during a raid on a property in Edinburgh.

Officers executed a warrant in the Combe Cruik area of the city at around 10.20am on Tuesday 3 March. During the search, PD Freddie - an eight-year-old Springer Spaniel trained in drugs detection - alerted officers to substances concealed inside a room.

A subsequent search led to the recovery of 3.64kg of diamorphine, commonly known as heroin, with an estimated street value of around £364,000. A five-figure sum of cash was also seized.

Two men, both aged 32, and a 36-year-old woman have been arrested and charged in connection with drugs offences. They are due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Lumsden described the seizure as significant.

He said: “This was a significant recovery which highlights our continued commitment to the Serious and Organised Crime Taskforce, and the country’s Serious and Organised Crime Strategy.

“Drugs cause misery in our community and the public has an important role to play in helping us to take action against those responsible for the manufacture and sale of illegal substances.

“Anyone with information or concerns about drugs should contact us on 101 or make a call to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Police Scotland said specialist search dogs like PD Freddie are regularly deployed as part of operations targeting serious and organised crime across the country.
