Outdoor playtime was briefly delayed at a primary school in Livingston after concerns were raised about a man with a knife nearby.

Staff at Howden St Andrew's Primary School contacted Police Scotland on Thursday after a member of the public reported an individual outside the school grounds.

A spokesperson for West Lothian Council said lunchtime play was held back as a precaution while officers attended.

They said: “Outdoor play at lunchtime was delayed as a precaution while Police Scotland attended, with pupils allowed outside a short while later after police confirmed it was safe.”

Police said the report related to a man seen throwing and kicking a knife near a tunnel by the A899 at around 12.40pm.

Inspector Murray Legge said: “There were no threats made. He dropped the knife, which we believe he found, and left the area.

“The knife was traced and will be destroyed.”

No one was injured and police confirmed the area was safe a short time later.
