RSPB Bempton Cliffs launches appeal for new Wildlife Viewing Gallery
Concept designs unveiled to enhance visitor experience and seabird monitoring
The RSPB has unveiled concept designs and launched a fundraising appeal to develop a new Wildlife Viewing Gallery at Bempton Cliffs in East Yorkshire.
The initiative, called "Make A Grandstand for Nature," seeks to raise £85,000 for detailed design work and further development stages.
This project aims not only to replace the existing viewpoint affected by cliff-top erosion but to enhance visitor experiences and support seabird monitoring efforts.
Conditional planning approval has been granted by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, paving the way for a cantilevered design inspired by the natural shape of the cliffs, featuring transparent balustrades to blend seamlessly into the landscape.
Dave O’Hara, Senior Reserve Manager at RSPB Bempton Cliffs, highlighted the importance of preserving the viewpoint, stating, “Increasing erosion along the cliff top means we now need to act to protect the future of this incredible viewpoint.”
Award-winning design and engineering company structureHaus has been chosen to create detailed plans, with tendering for construction scheduled for January next year.
The initiative will help transform Bempton Cliffs into a leading centre for seabird and marine monitoring and eco-tourism.
The project presents unique engineering challenges, requiring careful protection of the UK's busiest seabird colonies during development.
People can support the Bempton Cliffs fundraising appeal through the JustGiving page, "A Grandstand for Nature."
Construction is anticipated to commence in Autumn 2027.
