Plans have been submitted to Hull City Council for 24 affordable properties to be built off Preston Road.
The ‘White Place’ development has been designed to provide “housing aimed at vulnerable women”, the proposals say.
The properties would be built on L-shaped piece of land that surrounds the Preston Road Women’s Centre, otherwise known as Purple House. The development would consist of both townhouses and flats, totalling 24 units.
The application has been submitted by Winner Trading Ltd, the commercial arm of Winner, the charity who runs Purple House. Plans state the development would include an activity and office space which would connect to the adjacent women’s centre.
Despite most of the site’s land being currently empty, there is a single-storey building to the west of the site that sits north of Purple House. Plans explain that this building, which was formerly a Preston Road Family Community Centre, would be demolished.
The development would consist of 8 three-bed townhouses, 8 one-bed flats, and 8 two-bed flats. The flats would be arranged around a central courtyard that residents of all 24 properties would have access to.
Providing background information on the wider project, submitted planning documents explain: “In December 1999, a group of women came together to put a bid forward for funding for the women of Preston Road Estate. This project became known as Winner which stands for Women Improving Now Not Ever Retreating. The bid was successful and delivered evidence based research to prove the need for a women-only space on Preston Road.
“Winner provide a range of services including accredited courses for women, a specialist domestic violence and abuse service, a specialist sexual health service and an outreach support service, helping women isolated in their own homes.” They add that “many thousands” of women have benefitted from their services.
The development would be served by 7 parking spaces which would be accessible from Mappleton Grove, to the north of the site. In justifying the number, plans say: “We believe that this is sufficient because car ownership amongst existing residents associated with Winner is very low. Of the 181 current tenants, only 12 (6.6%) of the women have access to their own cars.”
