Planning permission has been granted for interlinked kids’ play towers that will feature in the revamping of Pier Gardens, Cleethorpes. Construction work on the rejuvenation of the green space began in February, with Pier Gardens closed to the public ever since.

Maylim is the contractor carrying out the £7.9m works, which are part of North East Lincolnshire Council regeneration ambitions for the coastal resort. When it reopens, Pier Gardens will have several new features, including a play area that will have water play and play structures, an outdoor educational area, a skate park and an outdoor performance zone.

Permission has now been granted for a series of interlinked play towers, which will replace the former crazy golf section of Pier Gardens. The timber play structure will consist of three play towers.

Two towers exceed exceed four metres in height, with one set to be 4.6m tall and the other 7.35m. Because of this, a full planning application was required for the towers.

Two towers will be circular and represent the Humber Forts, Haile Sand and Bull Sand. The other will be a timber lookout tower offering views over the play area and gardens.

On April 10, planning permission was confirmed for the timber towers, which will involve mountain larch and steel footings in their construction. The transformation of Pier Gardens is part of three council-instigated regeneration projects in total in Cleethorpes, following on from the Cleethorpes Masterplan, which was shaped by thousands of members of the public.

The other two involve a new tourism-focused building in Sea Road, and to make Market Place mostly pedestrianised. All projects are expected to start this year, and are being backed by £18.4m Levelling Up Fund cash, awarded in 2023.

A planning condition limits when construction of the play towers can take place to between 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. The overall transformation of Pier Gardens is expected to take 15 months, meaning it should reopen for Summer 2027.
