Paddleboard rescue operation at North Landing Flamborough
Coastguard assists after a leg injury and rising tide risk
Two people and a dog were rescued by Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team at North Landing, Flamborough, on Sunday 12th July 2026, after they found themselves in difficulty amongst the rocks following a paddleboarding outing.
The rescue team was initially responding to another incident but was redirected just after midday to the situation at North Landing.
Upon arrival, the Coastguard's Officer in Charge ‘carried out a dynamic assessment and determined that the safest course of action was for a tethered Coastguard Water Rescue Officer to enter the water and wade/swim to the casualties’ location’, the team said.
During the rescue, it was discovered that one person had sustained a significant lower leg injury.
A rescue plan was swiftly developed, involving the evacuation of the injured individual and her dog on a paddleboard.
The Coastguard personnel closely supervised as the casualties were floated to safety, while the second individual was aided in crossing the rocks back to the beach.
Following their safe arrival onshore, Coastguard Rescue Officers trained in casualty care conducted assessments.
‘Due to the nature of the injury, it was suspected the female casualty had sustained a lower leg fracture, and an ambulance from Yorkshire Ambulance Service was requested’, Coastguard Rescue Officers said.
She was subsequently transferred to the care of the ambulance crew.
‘We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery’, the team said.
The incident serves as an important reminder of the unpredictable nature of coastal conditions.
The Coastguard emphasised the need for appropriate clothing, safety gear, and contingency plans when engaging in activities along the coast.
