Age UK offers air-conditioned refuge from extreme temperatures
Older people in Hull and East Yorkshire are being encouraged to seek refuge from soaring temperatures in a newly opened air-conditioned cool space.
Age UK Hull and East Yorkshire has introduced the facility at its meeting room on Preston Road, near the Hull KR stadium, to provide relief from the heatwave.
Simon Himsworth, CEO of Age UK, described the initiative as a precautionary measure in response to extreme weather conditions.
"Warnings like this have last been seen in 2022," Himsworth said.
"There were around 1300 people who unfortunately passed away as a result of heat-related illnesses. It really is a time to take these things seriously."
Age UK invites individuals to take a break from the heat over the coming days at their air-conditioned meeting room.
Simon explained, "We're just offering an air-conditioned space where people can take some respite from the heat and have a cool drink and some time out from it."
The room is typically used for social gatherings and offers a temporary extension of Age UK’s ongoing services, providing a safe environment for staying hydrated and keeping cool.
Simon advised taking simple precautions such as consuming cold foods like salads and checking on elderly relatives or those under your care.
