New sensory area unveiled at Ings Library in Hull
Learners transform library spaces with vibrant decorations
Level 1 Painting and Decorating learners from Hull Training and Adult Education have successfully completed a hands-on community project at Ings Library, Hull.
Initially planned as a makeover for a single space, the project expanded to include the staff room due to the commitment and enthusiasm of the learners.
The newly designed sensory room, named The Lounge, aims to serve the local community for years, showcasing reading areas, soft toys, IT equipment, sensory lighting, and positive messages on the walls.
This endeavor will motivate learners to further enhance their painting and decorating skills.
Mia Clarkson, a 16-year-old student at HTAE, joined the program in September after attending taster sessions.
Reflecting on her first community project experience, Clarkson said it was fulfilling to witness the transformation and gain real-world work experience.
She expressed aspirations to progress to Level 2 and find employment in the trade after appreciating the hands-on learning and support from tutors.
Julie Sockett, Library and Information Manager at Ings Library, commended the learners for their outstanding work.
Sockett explained how the idea of updating a room at Ings Library emerged after receiving community funding for a sensory area.
She collaborated with Matthew Bibby, Painting and Decorating tutor, to provide learners with practical onsite experience.
Sockett noted the learners' professionalism, enthusiasm, and efficiency allowed them to finish two rooms instead of one.
The comprehensive project involved preparation, moving furniture, painting, and post-project cleaning, marking a successful real-world learning opportunity.
