A man from Hull has been sentenced following a police pursuit where a roads policing officer was injured after being reportedly struck by a vehicle in Hull in March.

Euan Silvester, aged 20, of Lambert Street appeared at Hull Crown Court last week (Friday, 5th July) where he was given a two-year detention order in a young offenders’ institution.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years and must pass an extended retest before being legally permitted to drive again.

In March, a roads policing officer was on patrol on Princes Avenue when he observed a suspected drug-related interaction involving a BMW X3.

As the officer attempted to follow the vehicle, it failed to stop and began driving at speed through residential streets, including Park Avenue and Chanterlands Avenue, reaching speeds of up to 50mph in a 20mph zone.

The driver of the vehicle eventually came to a stop in queuing traffic, and as the officer approached, the driver reversed at speed, colliding with the police motorcycle. The driver then once again made off from the scene, and the officer sustained minor injuries as a result.

Following the collision, officers conducted immediate area searches and began reviewing CCTV footage to trace the vehicle’s movements. Enquiries revealed that the BMW X3 had been seen travelling towards Dane Park Road shortly after the incident.

As a result of those enquires, the vehicle was located the next day severely fire-damaged in a field off Dane Park Road. In the early hours of the same morning, officers conducted arrest attempts at Silvester’s home address and he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, dangerous driving, and driving whilst disqualified.

Police Constable Mortimer from our Criminal Investigation Unit said:

“Officers carried out a thorough investigation following the incident, including CCTV analysis and community enquiries, which led to the identification of the vehicle, and Silvester.

“We are committed to taking action against those who pose a risk to the public and to our officers, and we will continue to investigate and bring offenders to justice.

“Our officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep our roads and communities safe. This case highlights the risks they face and the importance of holding dangerous drivers to account."
