Consultations are taking place in Hull today regarding the erection for a permanent memorial for the victims of the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors investigations.

A number of consultation sessions have been taking place across the Hull area for the gardens which are planned to be built at the Northern Cemetery in the city.

Another memorial garden will be installed at the Lelley Fields Crematorium near Preston in East Yorkshire.

In a statement released by Hull City Council, families have been at the centre of the proposals and were first consulted about the gardens before being opened up to the general public.

Surgeries had taken place at Hull History Centre on Worship Street, as well as Champney Treasure House in Beverley earlier in the month.

Now, residents who may have suggestions or concerns regarding the memorial gardens can give their thoughts at Lonsdale Community Centre in Hull.

As well as this, bereavement services will be available to those affected by the discussions in the wake of the scandals.

Speaking on the need for public consultation, Hull City Council’s Director of Adult Social Care, Tracy Meyerhoff, said the Council would be taking all feedback onboard.

"Whilst it’s important that those affected families have the chance to shape the memorial gardens, we really do want the views of our wider communities as well," she said.

“These events in Hull and Beverley are a great way to get more information from our dedicated and professional Bereavement Services team members."

As well as this, Angela Dearing from East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: "Our councils have worked closely with the staff at the Northern Cemetery and Lelley Fields to ensure the memorial gardens are going to be in the right place and of suitable design.

“This means that some of the parts of the designs can’t be changed, but there are a number of elements where we would really value views from our residents, so that we can make sure we can build gardens that are a fitting place for lasting remembrance.”
