Leaders comment on Grimsby's shortlisting for UK’s first Town of Culture
Town to receive £60,000 to develop its cultural bid with community input
Grimsby has been shortlisted for the UK’s inaugural Town of Culture award, an initiative expected to draw attention to the area's rich cultural heritage. As part of the shortlist, Grimsby is joined by 14 other towns and will receive £60,000 to develop its bid, with plans to engage community groups in decision-making processes on spending.
Local leaders believe this opportunity will highlight the town's distinct cultural identity. Oliver Freeston, leader of North East Lincolnshire, expressed enthusiasm for the recognition and underscored the importance of involving residents in how the funds are utilised.
"It's fantastic, isn't it? I mean, Grimsby is a great place to be. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else," Freeston said. He also emphasised the need for policymakers to listen to the community to build a lasting cultural legacy.
The initiative provides a platform for towns like Grimsby to showcase their historical and cultural assets while fostering stronger community connections.
The Mayor for Lincolnshire Andrea Jenkyns (Reform UK) said: "It's going to shine a spotlight on the town. I used to live in the area in my school days, so I think it's wonderful. It's massively important because also it can shine a positive light on our great community because we have so much to offer."
