The largest development scheme ever carried out by East Riding Of Yorkshire Council is almost complete after more than two-and-a-half years of work.

The £86.9-million Jock’s Lodge roundabout project will see traffic restrictions on the A1079 removed on Friday evening (September 11 2026).

This means the A1079 Jock’s Lodge roundabout, including the approaches, will be fully open to motorists bringing an end to a long period of delays and disruption.

Work began on the massive scheme in January 2024, and includes major work on two of the area’s busiest carriageways – the A164 Hull to Beverley and the A1079 Hull to York road.

The rest of the restrictions on the A164 will be removed in the coming weeks.

Once this final job is complete, the improvement scheme will be fully open. Traffic restrictions are expected to still be in place on the A1079 towards Kingswood though these are National Grid works and are not part of the Jock’s Lodge scheme.

Councillors praised the patience of local people and hope the scheme will relieve congestion and deliver easier journeys for motorists.

Councillor Michael Lee, East Riding Of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for housing, infrastructure and communications, said: “This has been a monumental task for our project team at the council and for our contractor GRAHAM, but they have done an amazing job to deliver this impressive new highway.

“I want to say a big thank you to drivers for their patience and understanding through all the construction work, but I’m sure they will soon benefit from smoother journeys on this route to the rest of the East Riding.”

The Department for Transport awarded £40.7m to the project, with the council investing £46.2million.

Alongside the roundabout improvements, the project has seen the creation of a new dual carriageway on the A164 between Beverley and Skidby roundabout and the erection of a new road bridge at Bentley.

As part of the construction project more than 128,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, more than 3km of cycle path has been improved and six new crossing points have been completed for pedestrians and riders.

Although the name ‘Jock’s Lodge’ is now synonymous with a busy route for traffic these days, the area was once a quiet rural corner of East Yorkshire and was surrounded by farmland and woods.

It is believed the original Jock’s Lodge was a ‘beer house’. Historical records show that 200 years ago there was a building close to today’s roundabout that was a type of small informal pub serving beer to weary travellers.
