Humberside firefighters urge people to choose organised bonfire events over their own
Watch manager shares safety advice for Bonfire Night
People in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire are being urged to go to an organised event rather than hold their own bonfire on Bonfire Night.
Humberside Fire and Rescue says public events are a safer environment than creating your own bonfire.
Nick Kingett, watch manager for the service, said: "We would like you to, if you can, use an organised event for your bonfire."
Nick said organised events have to carry out risk assessments and safety checks before they can go ahead.
For people using fireworks at home, Nick Kingett said: "If you are using fireworks at home, keep well back, keep safe, read the instructions."
Nick Kingett also said an adult should always supervise anyone using fireworks.
For anyone planning their own bonfire, Nick Kingett said: "We ask that if you are an adult that you have some form of water or extinguishing media present at your bonfire."
The service is also asking people to check the distance between their bonfire and fence panels, plants or anything else that could catch fire. A hose pipe or something similar should be close by.
Nick said crews are not bringing in extra firefighters for Bonfire Night, and it is business as usual for the service.
Nick said the service has enough operational capability to deal with the night. There will be more joint working with the police and other agencies at this time of year, to try to reduce the risk.
Nick said: "So we just want you to keep safe on bonfire night and as I say, if possible, attend a public organised event."
