Hull launches 'Right to Grow' to transform unused green spaces
Residents invited to reclaim green unused land through community gardening
Last updated 20th May 2025
Hull City Council is calling on residents and community groups to submit project ideas as part of its new Right to Grow initiative, which allows locals to turn unused council-owned land into green, community-focused spaces.
Launched after Hull became the first UK city to pass the Right to Grow motion in September 2023, the scheme supports small-scale gardening projects—such as growing food, planting wildflowers, or creating biodiverse habitats.
The programme aims to boost sustainability, biodiversity, and community wellbeing while encouraging people to take pride and ownership in their local environment.
Councillor Charles Quinn said the initiative offers a great opportunity for residents to “create beautiful, biodiverse spaces that benefit the entire community.”
Applications are now open. Interested individuals or groups can apply online and, if successful, will receive a licence agreement to begin their project.
