Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is set to revamp staff facilities as part of a significant investment project.

WISHH, the charity supporting Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, has allocated nearly £200,000 for this initiative.

Carl Wheatley, WISHH Chief Executive, detailed the importance of enhancing staff rest spaces, noting the impact on morale, wellbeing, and resilience.

"We are committed to supporting both patients and staff across Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust," Wheatley said. "We know that high-quality rest spaces are widely recognised as vital for staff, particularly in high-pressure clinical settings."

The project, partially funded through NHS Charities Together, aims to create calming environments for NHS staff to recharge during demanding shifts.

Wheatley explained, "The project has focused on improving dedicated staff rest spaces within the hospitals, creating calmer, more comfortable environments."

The refurbishment plans include enhancing décor, lighting, furnishings, and facilities, with staff input influencing the designs to meet practical and restorative needs.

"In total, eight staff rooms have been identified as requiring extensive refurbishment, and another 13 require moderate improvements," Wheatley added.

Simon Nearney, Group Chief People Officer, emphasized the necessity of restful areas for health and wellbeing.

“Having comfortable areas where you can take a break is really important for your health and wellbeing," Nearney said. "It has been great to see the progress that’s already been made.”

Meanwhile, the Health Tree Foundation, supporting hospitals in Grimsby, Scunthorpe, and Goole, awaits the outcome of a bid to NHS Charities Together by the end of next month.
