John Story is campaigning outside parliament today, calling for routine testing to spot type 1 diabetes early to prevent tragedies similar to his family's.

His daughter, Lyla, died at two years old after being misdiagnosed with tonsillitis when she had type 1 diabetes.

John hopes his actions will prompt change so no other family suffers such a loss.

John said: "It's a mix of emotions for me.

"There's pride, of course, pride in our Lyla, pride in the hundreds of thousands of people who have stood with us and pride that her name has now been spoken about in parliament.

"But it comes with deep sadness, because none of this should have been necessary.

"Walking into that debate, it will be emotional.

"I'll be thinking about Lyla every second, but it's also about basically every child that we can still save. And that's what keeps me going.

"This debate is not the end. It's another step towards real change.

"My daughter, Lyla, died because her type 1 diabetes was not spotted in time and no family should ever have to live with that.

"It's my belief and many people's belief that the system simply isn't set up to catch it early."

John will also meet Wes Streeting tomorrow to discuss this issue further.

John added: "I'm hoping that the eyes have it in parliament because that will give me even more strength and confidence going into the meeting with Wes.

"So I am taking every single email that I've received from people about missed and delayed diagnosis and hoping that he reads every single one of them."
