Hull and East Yorkshire's high streets are poised for transformation following new government powers aimed at curbing rogue retailers announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
These measures, targeting vape shops and betting shops, have been welcomed by Luke Campbell, the Reform UK Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire.
Campbell has urged the Prime Minister to be bolder in supporting small businesses, emphasising the need for more comprehensive policy changes that foster economic growth.
The Mayor highlighted business rates as a significant challenge for independent businesses.
"I have now lobbied two Prime Ministers so far and told them Mayors need to have control over how Business Rates are levied," Campbell said.
He believes that granting local leaders this control is vital for cultivating varied and successful town centres.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham echoed the sentiment, stating that revamped powers will enable local councils to eliminate undesired retail outlets and replenish town centres with valued services.
Angela Rayner, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, reinforced the government's commitment to empowering local communities with the authority to transform their high streets.
"People know when their high street isn’t working for them," Rayner said.
"That’s why we’re giving local leaders the power to say no to what doesn’t belong on their high street."
Campbell remains optimistic that these changes will spark improvement across the region.
He emphasised the importance of engaging with local people, noting the promising initiatives like the programmes at Wenlock Barracks.
Additionally, Campbell is advocating for ambitious projects like Hull City Council’s original cruise terminal vision, seeing such undertakings as catalysts for growth and investment.
