Grimsby widow shares husband's organ donation legacy during awareness week
Phil Kershaw's donations saved lives after his death
Caroline Kershaw from Grimsby is recounting how her late husband, Phil Kershaw, saved three lives through organ donation, coinciding with Organ Donation Awareness Week from 21st to 27th September.
Phil, who was only 38 years old, tragically passed away in December 2021 after developing severe depression and attempting suicide.
Despite being resuscitated and cared for at the Intensive Care Unit in Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby, tests revealed no brain activity.
Though the couple hadn't discussed organ donation, Caroline honoured Phil's documented wish to donate his organs by ticking the box on his driving licence.
"The passing was heartbreaking, but both Phil's mother and I wanted a positive impact to come from it," Caroline said.
Phil's organ donations have brought new life to three recipients, including a young mother and a long-term transplant list patient.
Caroline shares this story to highlight the life-changing impact of organ donation, as more than 8,000 individuals in the UK await transplants.
Lisa Cochrane, Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, urged people to register as organ donors.
“We’re deeply grateful for Caroline’s decision and how it profoundly impacts lives,” Cochrane said.
Caroline advocates considering the significant benefits of organ donation even amid grief, providing happiness to others.
