Grimsby man jailed for five years for repeated abuse and coercion
Gary Atmore subjected his victim to years of torment and manipulation
Gary Atmore, a 49-year-old from Grimsby, has been sentenced to five years in prison after admitting to a campaign of abuse, coercion, and manipulation against a woman he knew.
Appearing at Hull Crown Court on 13th October 2026, Atmore pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including assault, controlling and coercive behaviour, and sharing intimate images without consent.
The charges also included a count of perverting the course of justice after Atmore attempted to bribe the victim and her family to retract their statements.
Detective Constable Sidney Brown, who led the investigation for Humberside Police's Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Investigation Team, commended the bravery of the victim: "It is because of the courage and patience shown by the woman that Atmore is now being held accountable for his crimes and unable to inflict any more harm upon her."
During the investigation, it was revealed that Atmore's abusive behaviour included harassment via phone calls and messages, sharing indecent videos, and attempts to manipulate the victim through money.
The woman courageously spoke out following his sentencing, detailing the lasting impact of Atmore's behaviour: "Even though he is in prison, I still get worried about who will turn up at my house, and his sentence will not take away the fact I find it so hard to move on with my life."
If you or someone you know is affected by domestic abuse, Humberside Police urge you to speak with someone you trust and report it via their non-emergency number 101.
For immediate danger, call 999 and if unable to speak, tap the handset or press 55 to transfer the call directly to the police.
