£200k investment to upgrade Goole Swing Bridge infrastructure
Network Rail aims to improve reliability and safety at Victorian bridge
Network Rail is investing £200,000 to upgrade equipment at the Grade II*-listed Goole Swing Bridge, enhancing the reliability and safety of train operations across the River Ouse.
Scheduled for Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October, the project will involve renewing power cables and 16 control units crucial for safe train passage, resulting in buses replacing trains between Doncaster and Hull during this period.
Mark Hayles, Network Rail's Head of Route Operations, underscored the significance of replacing ageing equipment with modern components, stating that the upgrade will mitigate the risk of equipment failures and maintain dependable rail services.
Hayles said, “This £200,000 investment at Goole Swing Bridge will replace ageing equipment with modern, more reliable components, helping us maintain a safe and dependable railway for passengers and freight customers."
The Goole Swing Bridge, one of the largest and oldest railway swing bridges in the UK, has a rich historical significance with much of its machinery from the Victorian era.
This upgrade is part of Network Rail’s ongoing maintenance programme, following last year's refurbishment that modernised operating systems and upgraded various infrastructure components.
Passengers are advised to plan ahead and check journey details with National Rail or their train operator before travelling.
Network Rail appreciates the patience of passengers during these essential upgrades to ensure a safer and more reliable railway service.
