Network Rail is investing £200,000 to renew crucial equipment at Goole Swing Bridge, one of the UK's largest surviving railway swing bridges, to enhance safety and reliability over the River Ouse.

The investment includes the replacement of power cables and 16 control units essential for the bridge's operation, reducing the risk of equipment failures and ensuring safe passage for both passenger and freight trains.

Due to these upgrades, passengers are advised that train services will be replaced by buses between Doncaster and Hull on 17th and 18th October.

The Grade II*-listed Goole Swing Bridge, operating for over 150 years, is undergoing these enhancements as part of Network Rail's ongoing maintenance and renewal programme.

Mark Hayles, Network Rail head of route operations, emphasized the importance of these modern upgrades in maintaining a dependable railway for passengers and freight customers.

“We’re renewing power cables and key control units to help minimize faults and maintain reliable train movements through this critical location."

The bridge previously benefited from a major refurbishment in summer 2023, updating its hydraulic and control systems among other features.

Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and check their journey details with National Rail or their train operator.
