Emergency accommodation opens for homeless veterans in Hull
Charity Hull 4 Heroes renovates property to assist veterans with housing and support
Veterans facing homelessness in Hull will now have access to safe, renovated accommodation, thanks to the efforts of Hull 4 Heroes and support from BAE Systems.
Hull 4 Heroes purchased the property in 2024 and recently transformed it into three fully-equipped living units with the help of tradespeople and volunteers who gave hundreds of hours to make the changes.
The new units aim to provide stable, temporary housing for veterans transitioning back to civilian life, offering wraparound support that includes welfare advice, mental health services, peer mentoring, employability assistance, and social integration activities.
Paul Matson, CEO of Hull 4 Heroes, explained the significance of the project.
“This project is more than just a renovation; it’s a lifeline for homeless veterans. We can offer instant and stable accommodation, alongside in-house support, the moment a veteran needs it. It could truly mean the difference between continued hardship on the streets and a life-saving fresh start for those who’ve served,” Matson said.
Each unit includes a private bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom, and living area, promoting independence and dignity. Communal spaces are also available to foster social connections and build a sense of community.
The initiative has received backing from BAE Systems, whose Senior Manager, Dave Beales, praised the project and the volunteers involved.
“We’re honoured to play a part in helping Hull 4 Heroes realise its ambitions to help veterans transitioning smoothly into civilian life. As a provider of defence and security, we work closely with the UK Armed Forces and understand how important it is to support our veterans. This project will make a real impact, and I’d like to thank the BAE Systems colleagues from our local Brough site, who got stuck in and volunteered their time for this important project,” Beales said.
In 2025, Hull 4 Heroes was able to assist more than 35 veterans by funding emergency accommodation. With the new property, the charity aims to reduce reliance on hotels and guest houses, ensuring immediate access to safe and self-contained units whenever they are needed.
