A major road improvement scheme is set to begin next month on a key rural route in Holderness.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council will invest £250,000 to upgrade Out Newton Road in Out Newton, between Holmpton and Easington.

The six-week project, due to start on Monday, 1 September, will include resurfacing bends, patching worn sections, strengthening road edges and replacing damaged kerbing.

The work is designed to prepare the route for surface dressing – the application of stone chippings to seal and protect the road – which will take place next year to guard against potholes and further deterioration.

During the scheme, sections of Out Newton Road will be closed to through traffic, although access for residents will be maintained.

A diversion route will be in place via Balk Hill, Out Newton Road, Main Road, Holmpton Road, A1033 Withernsea Road, A1033 Hollym Road, B1445 High Street, Eastgate, Welwick Road, Skeffling Road and Weeton Road.

The project will be carried out by the council’s own road maintenance team.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Thank you to local residents and drivers for bearing with us while we carry out this essential work to improve this road in Holderness.”
