Woman in court charged with murder after body of man found in van in Leicester
Harinder Kaur was charged on Tuesday after the body of a man in his 30s was discovered in a Ford Transit van in a car park in Garden Street
A woman accused of murder and perverting the course of justice after the body of a man was found in the back of a van has appeared in court.
Assisted by a Punjabi interpreter, Harinder Kaur, 39, was told she is in a “very serious position” by a judge as she faced Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday.
Kaur, of Sutton Dene in Hounslow, west London, was charged on Tuesday after the body of a man in his 30s was discovered in a Ford Transit van in a car park in Garden Street, Leicester, at around 5.30pm on May 27 when a member of the public reported concerns about the condition of the vehicle.
The case, initially investigated by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit with help from Leicestershire Police, was transferred to the Metropolitan Police.
The van was registered to an address in west London.
Prosecution counsel Elizabeth Dodds told Judge Timothy Spencer KC a request would be made to transfer the case from Leicester Crown Court to the Old Bailey in London because the crime scene and many witnesses are in the city.
Judge Spencer adjourned the hearing so inquiries could be made with the Central Criminal Court about whether it has capacity to take on the case, but he said Leicester could accommodate a trial early next year.
The judge told Kaur: “You are in a very serious position. You face a murder charge, the most serious charge.
“There is something of a question mark over where your trial will be.
“You have heard, through an interpreter, all that I have said and we will return to your case later today.
“Know that you are staying in custody. You must go down now and I will see you later.”
