Tribute paid to father-of-three who's died days after being assaulted outside a Leicestershire pub

The family of a man whose death in Leicestershire is being treated as murder say he was 'devoted' and a 'friend to all'.

David Darke died in hospital yesterday - six days after being punched outside a pub in Appleby Magna.

The 66 year old, known to loved ones as Dave, was a father to three daughters and a grandfather to three boys.

In a statement, his family said: “Dave was a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys.

“He was a much-loved brother and a dear friend. Dave will live on forever in our hearts, minds and souls.

“He was a strong, active, intelligent and kind person who was a friend to all. He was a devoted family man with a deep passion for life, the outdoors, nature, and walking.

“His life was tragically cut short and he’s now reunited with his loving, caring parents. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.”

Ongoing investigation

Police inquiries into Mr Darke's death are being led by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit. He was was injured outside the Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, on December 21st.

Police, who were called to the pub at around 9.45pm last Sunday, said: "The victim was outside The Crown public house when he was punched, sustaining a serious head injury.

"Sadly, the victim, 66-year-old David Darke, passed away at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham."

An appeal for information about the assault in Church Street is ongoing.

A 36-year-old man was re-arrested yesterday on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
