A man from Doncaster has been jailed after grooming and sexually abusing a Leicestershire schoolgirl, with police urging other potential victims to come forward.

Shoaib Mohammed, 35, admitted to a string of offences against a girl from when she was just 15-years-old in 2021.

He changed his plea before the start of the trial at Leicestershire Crown Court last month.

His victim, 20 and whose identity is protected, said: "For five years, I have waited to be heard. I have had to relive the events, prepare myself mentally to face you in court. I had prepared myself to stand here and tell the truth about what happened when I was 15. I had prepared myself to once again rip the scab of a healing wound and let it bleed once more and then you pleaded guilty."

Mohammed first contacted the girl on Snapchat in 2021 when she was 15. Over the following seven months, he groomed the her before persuading her to meet him in Sheffield. There, he sexually abused her in hotels and his car between 8 and 10 November.

CCTV footage showed he had checked into hotels alone before bringing his victim in through reception and going straight to the room.

The woman continued: "While that is a victory of acknowledgement that the evidence against you is substantial, I know the plea wasn’t for anyone but yourself, that felt like another loss of power.

“I have grown up while carrying something that should never have been placed on the shoulders of a child. I have had to grown from 15 to 20 with this experience permanently forming part of my life.

"Shoaib, you may have been able to walk away from the court without hearing me give evidence, but I will not allow that to mean that the impact goes unheard. You took so much from me when I was 15. You do not get to take this from me too.”

He was known to operate under the username 'shabzique91' and police are urging any other potential victims for come forward.

DC Daljinder Gill said: "Mohammed was an adult who developed a relationship with a child through social media. She told him about her 15th birthday shortly after they started talking, meaning he was in no doubt about her age. Despite knowing she was a child, he continued to engage her in sexual communications before going on to sexually abuse her.

“The bravery and strength the victim has shown throughout the investigation and court proceedings has been remarkable. From making her initial disclosure to police at just 15 years old, to standing in court today as a woman and reading aloud the impact his offending has had on her, she has shown immense courage throughout. I hope today’s outcome gives her some sense that she has been heard and that Mohammed has been held accountable for what he did to her.

“Following the sentence, we want to hear from anyone else who may have experienced similar behaviour from Mohammed or who has concerns about contact they have had with him.

“We know grooming can be difficult to recognise, particularly when contact begins online, and a young person believes they are in a friendship or relationship. They may not recognise the behaviour for what it is until much later.

“If anything about this case feels familiar to you, please come and speak to us. You will be listened to, taken seriously and supported.”

Mohammed, of Kentmere Drive, Doncaster, was sentenced to a total of 11 years and will also be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 15 years.
