Police forces in the East Midlands have issued statements following a social media trend, which is encouraging violence between students.

The so-called 'school wars' pits pupils from different schools against each other, with some being on the blue team, whilst others are on the red.

Derbyshire Police said: "We have been made aware of social media posts, linked to a national trend, referencing schools in Derby and encouraging violence between students.

"While we have not had any reported incidents related to these posts we are working closely with the schools that have been mentioned across the city, and we will be increasing our policing presence in and around them as a precaution.

"We would urge parents and guardians in both the city and wider county to speak to their young people and ensure they are aware of not to be involved in any incidents."

Nottinghamshire Police issued a statement too: "As a precautionary measure, we will have a heightened presence in several areas over the next few days which will include reassurance patrols at schools.

"We are in close contact with schools and we are working with partners and other interested parties, while carrying out intelligence checks.

"We will not tolerate violence and any incidents reported to us will be investigated accordingly.

"Anyone involved in incidents of violence and disorder will be robustly dealt with."

Leicestershire Police said: "The force is aware of videos and posts being circulated on social media.

"Those schools referenced in the post have been contacted by officers from their relevant Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) and advised to report any issues or concerns.

An appropriate policing plan is in place."
